Howard Arnold Sieven, loving husband, father, and grandfather, died peacefully from complications of Parkinson's and heart failure on the evening of September 4, 2024 at his summer home in East Montpelier, VT. At the time, he was with his wife, Carolyn, of 61 years.
Howard was born in Brooklyn on July 30, 1929. He was the second child born to Harry and Ada Sieven, who had immigrated from the Ukraine. Howard had an older sister, Helen, with whom he was very close and who passed away in 1997. Howard graduated from NYU undergraduate and Harvard law school. Between undergrad and law school he served in the Korean war. He went on to practice law as a personal injury attorney for 50 years.
Howard and Carolyn were married in 1963 and had two daughters, Abigail, born in 1966 and Emily, born in 1974. Howard and Carolyn first met on Fire Island where they spent summer weekends with friends. After marrying, they first lived in Greenwich Village, NYC and then spent 33 years in Armonk, NY. Upon Howard's retirement, Howard and Carolyn split their time between the Upper West Side of Manhattan and East Montpelier, VT., which was where Carolyn grew up.
In 2002, Abigail married Marc Spetalnik and together they have two children; Vanessa who is 19 and Natalie who is 12. In 2001, Emily married Tom Ingles and together they have two children; Kate who is 19 and Will who is 16.
Howard was known as a kind, intelligent, thoughtful and caring man, loved by everybody who knew and met him. He enjoyed and appreciated all forms of the arts including theater, classical music, ballet, and museums. Above all, he truly enjoyed spending time with his family. One of his most favorite places to be was sitting on the deck looking out over the mountains at his home in East Montpelier, "where a man could breathe."
The family will receive guests from 10:00 AM to 11 AM on Wednesday, September 11, 2024. at Riverside Memorial Chapel, 180 West 76th Street, New York, NY 10023. The funeral service will begin at 11:00 AM
Following the funeral service, the burial will take place at Sharon Gardens Cemetery, 273 Lakeview Ave, Valhalla, NY 10595.
